Biografi :

Di awal tahun 1981, Lars Ulrich sang drummer memasang iklan dalam sebuah koran setempat mencari personil untuk membentuk sebuah band. Iklan ini mendapat sambutan dari James Hetfield yang dengan segera bergabung dengan band yang belum punya nama ini.

Formasi awal dari Metallica adalah Lars Ulrich (drums), James Hetfield (vocal/ guitar), Dave Mustaine (guitar), Ron McGovney (bass). Formasi awal ini dengan segera berganti lantaran Lars dan James merasa tak sejalan dengan Dave dan Ron.

Posisi gitaris dan basis dengan segera digantikan oleh Kirk Hammett dan Cliff Burton. Formasi ini kemudian merilis album pertama mereka KILL ‘EM ALL. Secara komersial album pertama dan album kedua mereka, RIDE THE LIGHTNING tak bisa dibilang sukses.

Baru saat Metallica melepas album ketiga mereka MASTER OF PUPPETS, kesuksesan mulai datang. Album ini adalah album pertama Metallica yang berhasil meraih gold album. Bahkan tahun 2003 kemarin, album ini sudah meraih 6 platinum album.

Tahun 1987, Jason Newsted bergabung dengan Metallica lantaran Cliff Burton meninggal dalam sebuah kecelakaan di Swedia. Formasi ini sempat bertahan lama hingga Jason memutuskan undur diri tahun 2001 kemarin. Saat mengerjakan album ke-8 mereka ST. ANGER posisi basis terpaksa diisi oleh produser mereka Bob Rock.

Setelah menghabiskan waktu 3 bulan mencari pengganti Jason, akhirnya Robert Trujillo lah yang dipilih sebagai basis. Dengan formasi ini, Metallica akhirnya merekam album ke-9 mereka DEATH MAGNETIC yang rencananya akan dilepas September nanti.

Garage Inc. is a compilation/cover album by American heavy metal band Metallica, released in 1998.

It includes recorded cover versions of other artists’ songs, all of their b-side covers released up to that point, and the entire The $5.98 E.P.: Garage Days Re-Revisited, which had gone out of print since its original release in 1987. The title is a combination of Garage Days Re-Revisited and their song Damage, Inc.

Ride the Lightning is the second album by American thrash metal band Metallica, released on July 27, 1984 by Megaforce Records and re-released by Elektra Records on November 19, 1984. It has sold over 5 million copies in the U.S. alone.

Ride the Lightning is often hailed by fans as a classic of the thrash metal genre, and a vital bridge between the band’s albums Kill ‘Em All and Master of Puppets, pushing the thrash metal of the debut into progressive territory more fully-realized on Master of Puppets and …And Justice for All.

Ride the Lightning retains the speed of Kill ‘Em All on songs like “Trapped Under Ice” and “Fight Fire with Fire”, but also contains the first of Metallica’s longer, more symphonically arranged tracks, such as “Fade to Black” and the nearly 9-minute closing instrumental “The Call of Ktulu”.

Ride the Lightning was listed at #3 on a list compiled by metal-rules.com of the Top 100 Metal Albums of All Time and #5 by IGN Music on the Top 25 Metal Albums.

The album included melody, maturity and musical intelligence. It was these traits which helped them broaden metal’s scope.

With this album Metallica confirm their total control on Thrash Metal and their consolidation like an international band. In this album the band members were fully adapted to each other and make a more mature and considerably better musical album. The lyrics of this album are also better than in the last one, they do not speak now about headbanging, blood, and those things, in “Ride The Lightning” they speak about personal problems like in ‘Fade To Black’ inspired by the theft of band’s equipment. Other tracks are inspired by H.P. Lovecraft and the movie ‘The Ten Commandments’ like ‘Creeping Death’.

2008 reissue of the 1986 album, Master of Puppets by Metallica which was ranked eighth on the list of the biggest selling groups in history, and one of the most influential bands in music. Metallica proved its metal with this groundbreaking album and it was hailed as a masterpiece by critics far outside Heavy Metal’s core audience.

Master Of Puppets sold over half a million copies at its time of release without any major video/radio airplay, making it the band s first record to be certified Gold by the RIAA. It was the last album the band recorded with bass player Cliff Burton before his death later that year.

It is their first studio album to feature bassist Jason Newsted and without former bassist Cliff Burton. The front cover depicts the statue of Lady Justice cracked and bound by ropes, with both of her scales filled with dollars and both of her breasts exposed. The words “…And Justice for All” are written in graffiti to the right. This was used to symbolize that Justice had been raped, which is the main theme of the album as expressed in songs such as “Eye of the Beholder” and “…And Justice for All”.

The album has sold over 8 million copies in the US alone according to the RIAA.

The production of the album is noted for its unusual, and at times “one-dimensional”, post-production mix. The quality of the album’s sound has been described as “cold” and “flat”, due in part to the way the instruments were recorded. The bass drums don’t “thud” so much as “click”, while the guitars “buzz thinly”

Metallica’s lead guitarist:
Kirk Lee Hammett (born on November 18, 1962) is the lead guitarist and a songwriter in the band Metallica and has been a member of the band since 1983. Before joining Metallica he formed and named the band Exodus. Respected among his peers for his guitar style, in 2003 Hammett was ranked 11th in Rolling Stone’s list – The 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time.
